GUITARIST'S GUITARIST

Jeff Beck is by far the greatest living guitarist. If you watch what he can do with his hands it will amaze you. His hand on the neck is great, but it is his other hand that is truly mind blowing. His constant touch on tone, volume, whammy bar, etc. and he actually gets all this done with nothing but his hands, no pick. I have seen Jeff 5 times now in concert, got to meet him backstage once and I have enjoyed his shows so much.

JEFF BECK AT THE MOODY THEATER, AUSTIN, TX

in complete fairness: the bass kickback was terrible for the first two songs, and the overall loudness a little too much. by the fourth song, either i had accommodated or it was remedied by technical staff. i don't mind jim's singing, but he was an overall negative for me: his visible cavorting and attention-grabbing was excessive - people came to the "jeff beck" show - and poor etiquette toward the star. i do thinik jim did a good job on two songs, but even those could have been cut by a couple of minutes. vinny and rhonda were superb, and the cellist was superfluous but competent having seen jeff and a variety of other greats with him on many occasions, i thought that jeff played as well as i've ever heard ...and i've been a fan since the 60's hardly any professional continues to evolve or to stay on the cutting edge of his art or science, because of the ego's expectations and its implicit fear. jeff beck reinvents himself and the possibilities of guitar at every outing. Jeff!

FINALLY!

I finally got to realize my lifelong desire to see this rock icon in person. I most certainly was not in the least disappointed. It's no wonder that he is idolized by so many of rock guitar legends. Of course, he mentored many of them. At times, I couldn't help but yell my approval, as did so many of those in the audience. I'm 72 years old and first discovered Jeff upon the release of his incredible 1967 album...…..Truth. That album, in this man's opinion, is one of the greatest of all time. Why not? It featured Rod Stewart as the singer before he really hit the big time and none other than Ron Wood as the drummer. Need I say more? I most certainly got my money's worth, to say the least. BTW, the drummer was absolutely phenomenal. I don't know his name but was told that he is among the best in the world. No doubt. If I could see him again tonight, I would. "Nuff said.

JEFF BECK CHICAGO 2022

My first JB concert left me satisfied. I was sitting in Balcony center kinda high, but there’s only 3,500 seats, the venue was packed. The view & sound were terrific. I did drop into 2Twenty2 Tavern on south Wabash, really clean by bar standards. Good selection of craft & bottled beer, liquor too. Fresh food available although I didn’t eat anything there.

JEFF BECK & JOHNNY DEPP

AMAZING Show! Jeff Beck is such a talented musician, his skill is immense. Johnny Depp sounded amazing & played amazing - I am huge fan of JD’s acting & not throwing false praise to fangirl- even was bit skeptical of how he’d sound live - he did not disappoint. JD doesn’t have the same skillset as Jeff, but he’s pretty dang good!! Well worth it! So happy I got to see them together, loved the show, the duo was fantastic & great chemistry!!

LOVE BECK, DEPP NOT SO MUCH.

Beck & band were outstanding. Drummer was exceptional. Beck w/Depp without the vocals grooved. Anthem is an excellent venue with great acoustics.

BECK STILL INCREDIBLY TALENTED, BUT TURN IT DOWN TO 11

The show was an enjoyable one save for the unnecessary thunderous sound of the bass and drums. Seriously, we measured 121 decibels at one point. No need for that. Earplugs should have been handed out at the door.... Still ALL the musicians were absolutely top notch, with Vinnie Colauita on drums still proving he is among the very best in the world at his trade. Wow. The cellist was a nice touch on a couple of songs but was otherwise totally drowned out by the bass and drum sound level. Regardless, it was fantastic to see one of the absolute masters at his craft showing that he still has it.

PHOENIX 9/24/19 - PRETTY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT OVERALL

I've been a Jeff Beck fan for many years. He is definitely one of the greatest guitarist's of our time. I loved the Wired album from 1976. A great fusion masterpiece. I'm also a drummer for over 45 years and play fusion type music so for me, to see Vinnie Colaiuta, one of the greatest drummers in the world and ex-Frank Zappa drummer, was a real treat. Jeff was great and so was the newer bass player Rhonda Smith, who played for Prince and Beyonce for years. Jeff didn't say one word before, during or after the show which I thought was pretty odd. No "hello Phoenix" or "thank you Phoenix", etc.. He (they) just played song after song. Not one song from the Wired album (I don't think) which was a real bummer. Then, as he has done in the past, all of a sudden a guy jumps on stage and starts playing guitar with him. It was Johnny Depp. What a joke and useless! Depp looked like a teenage wanna be and ruined the essence of a Jeff Beck show. Jimmy Hall sang a few which was horrble!

HMM...

This must have been the 8th time I’ve seen him since 1974. His guitar playing is always stellar, but not saying one word, even not introducing the band was plain sad. It was a short set, with Johnny Depp stepping up to play guitar? A bummer.... a weak encore also.

JEFF BECK WAS AMAZING, DEPP HOWEVER...

We went to see Jeff Beck in NY, as part of my business trip to the US. He was amazing and didn't disappoint. The way his fingers glided across the strings like butter and the way he interacted with the audience was amazing. He's an overall great musician who values the art of rock music and it shows. Which begs the question: Why would someone as talented as Beck drag Depp on stage? I don't care about the drama revolving Johnny Depp, I came for the music, hell I was even excited about seeing an actor I knew for years live. Well, until he started "playing" the guitar. He kept fiddling around with the guitar, only to celebrate himself for touching the strings a few seconds. It felt like he was "freestyling" the whole time, he didn't match the other guitarists at all. At one point he started "singing" (and he shouldn't!), he sounded awful... just awful. The audience didn't seem to like him either, people were mocking him, that was fun. Jeff Beck: 5 Stars Johny Depp: 0 Stars

DEPP WAS DRAGGED IN TO SELL TICKETS

The show was good until Jack Sparrow showed up. I thought he was a semi-competent guitar player (no more than that), and a terrible singer. I was really trying to listen to his "rhythm playing," but it sounded muffled, as if his amp had been turned down to prevent him from messing up Beck's playing. I understand why Beck did this, but I do not approve.

A LET DOWN.........

Unlike Brian Klein, my wife and I did not enjoy this concert. Whilst we both appreciate the fact that Jeff Beck is one of the top guitarists around, his actual show was a real let down. All the numbers were played on the same Fender Strat and seemed only different because of tempo. Not once did Mr Beck address the crowd during the main part of the show; not even a "good evening Phoenix" or a simple "thank you" for very generous applause after each number - in my opinion that is both arrogant and rude and totally uncalled for. The band were ok though I failed to see why the cello player was there at all and the choice of Jimmy Hall as vocalist was a sad one - I have Wet Willie albums and he was great back then but at this show he just screamed which is not what I call singing! The only pluses of the night were the location........my Wife was a regulat at the Celebrity in the 70's and loved being back there!......and the choice of Nils Lofgren as opening act-a truly class act.
